August is a busy month! Straight from X Games to Germany. Where in Germany do you ask? Berlin to be exact. Home of Mellow Park and the Rebel Jam. This was the 2nd time I've been to Berlin, but the first time competing at the event. I flew out last year after injuring my knee at X Games and just hung out and watched from the sidelines. It's a super fun event with a laid back, festival atmosphere. So I was very excited to be able to actually ride in the event this year.
On the way to Berlin I was flying solo until I got to Frankfurt. I met up with Chris Doyle there and finished up the last leg of the flight with him. We actually ended up being roommates for the weekend as well, which is a good thing. We both have a similar sense of humor so there was never a dull moment.
Berlin is a very cool city. Rich in history and culture. Unfortunately on this trip I didn't have much time at all to experience it. The Kabab shop and the hotel were the extent of our sight seeing adventures on this trip. The weather was giving us problems from time to time and rain delays were abundant through out the weekend. That kept us "on call" for the whole weekend, having to pad up and ride whenever the sun showed its face.
I mainly hung out with the Australian crowd during the event (Colin Mackay, Dave Dillewaard, Corey Bohan, Ryan Guettler, Nick Cooper, and Clint Miller). At one point we were on our way to go sight seeing but got called back to the event before we could reach our destination. The most culture we took in on this trip was a nice old man who proceeded to belly dance for us.
Very memorable!!!!
The event eventually went off without a hitch on Sunday, cramming all 3 finals (miniramp, street, and dirt) into one afternoon, making for a very tiring , but fun weekend.
But, by far, one of the best things that happened to us on this trip was the morning we were meant to leave to fly back home. We had ordered a "large" taxi to take us, and all our bags, to the airport early in the morning. The taxi shows up and it is anything but "large". But instead of calling for another cab, the man insists that we can fit all of the people =and luggage in the taxi, "no problem". The end result was seven people and so many bags packed into this taxi that there was just about no space unused.
Definitely a good trip. Keep an eye out for my next blog post from the AST Dew Tour stop in Portland, Oregon. Should be a good one!
